Our Founding Fathers
They built this country for the future,
For generations they would never know.
They planted freedom like a seed,
Believing one day it would grow.
They did not fight for only themselves.
They fought for the children yet to be.
For every son and every daughter
Who would inherit liberty.
“We hold these truths to be self-evident,”
They wrote with courage in their hands.
That all men were created equal,
And freedom should survive the plans
Of kings who thought they owned the people,
And rulers who demanded fear.
They dreamed of something greater
That would last beyond their years.
“Give me liberty or give me death,”
Was not an empty cry.
They knew that freedom had a cost,
And some would have to die.
They left their homes and families.
They faced the fire and the cold.
Not knowing if the nation
Would survive to become old.
Benjamin Franklin warned the people,
“A republic, if you can keep it.”
Because freedom can be handed down,
But every generation must defend it.
They gave us more than land and laws.
They gave us something to protect.
A country built for those unborn,
Whose lives they could not yet expect.
Our forefathers looked toward the future.
They trusted us to understand.
That freedom is not simply given.
It must be guarded by our hands.
They built this country for their children,
And for their children’s children too.
They sacrificed their present
To leave a better world for you.
